It’s been a tumultuous few weeks for the world of DC Comics and Warner Brothers. With rumors that Henry Cavill will soon be leaving the films, as well as non-stop rumors that Ben Affleck will do the same, they’re quickly losing stars. However, there is some hope that DC and WB will be shifting their strategy. When it came out that Martin Scorsese was in talks to produce a film on the Joker, many raised their eyebrows. While Scorsese did not jump on board, “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips took the project forward. With a cast starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz and Robert De Niro, this is shaping up to be an interesting film.
Over the weekend, Phillips officially shared his first images of Phoenix in the role of the Joker. With the film premised on the Joker’s origins, it feels unlikely we’ll see the makeup until the very end of the film. Still, the early look calls back to various iterations of the character from years past. However, most cinephiles will draw comparisons to the early 1990s, “In the Name of the Father” Daniel Day-Lewis. Considering the film will supposedly be set in the 1980s, this doesn’t feel too crazy.

We had already received news that the Joker’s original name will be Arthur for the purposes of the film. That feels far more organic than the often used alias Joe Kerr. There should be some who hope we never actually get the iconic makeup until the end of the film. That feels like a more compelling film narratively. Still, the makeup and purple suit remain iconic, so don’t be surprised if you catch a glimpse in the coming months.
