Every so often, true-crime documentaries can rock the boat in a significant way. The story of Randall Dale Adams became a nationwide phenomenon when Errol Morris examined his case with “The Thin Blue Line” in 1988. The West Memphis Three were the subjects of documentaries for years. Just a few years ago, “Making a Murderer” became the latest true-crime cultural phenomenon. The story of Brandon Dassey and Steven Avery blew up in late 2015 and early 2016. Since then, the story of Dassey and Avery continues to fascinate. Considering the scale of the show’s 10-year investigation, it is no surprise that Netflix will bring the series back for another season.
The 4-time Emmy winning series returns with Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos at the helm. Many have asked what the new season of “Making a Murderer” will cover. According to the Netflix press release, audiences will spend time with Kathleen Zellner, a postconviction lawyer grinding out the case to give Steven Avery another chance. Along the way, she uncovers evidence about the murder of Teresa Halbach and explains why the jury convicted Avery in the first place.
Simultaneously, Dassey’s case came back into the limelight when it was announced that he may receive a release due when a judge rules the confession was illegally obtained. The fight over Dassey’s case raged for months between 2017 and 2018. Eventually, the Supreme Court became involved. Between Zellner’s inclusion and the headway the Dassey case made, there is sure to be plenty of material this time around.
