Festivals: The Middleburg Film Festival Announces ‘Roma’ and Talent Attending

While we are clearing the big film festivals, including TIFF, BFI London, and New York Film Festival, there are many other films to see around the country. Regional festivals continue the push for awards contenders, and often give local critics the first look at some strong contenders. As the regional critics weigh in on films, support continues to grow. This helps build narratives that lead to eventual wins. One of these regional festivals on the rise continues to be the Middleburg Film Festival. Today, they announced many of their films, as well as some of the talent involved. Among these films are “Roma,” “Green Book” and “Boy Erased.”

First, “Roma” will be the opening night film, and actress Yalitza Aparicio will receive the festival’s 2018 “Rising Star” Award. The Friday spotlight films will be Joel Edgerton’sBoy Erased” with Edgerton and author of the book, Garrard Conely in attendance. Jason ReitmanMatt Bai, and Jay Carson will discuss “The Front Runner” at the Centerpiece Screening. Finally, Peter Farrelly and Viggo Mortensen will be in attendance for “Green Book” as it closes out the festival.

There are several other tributes occurring at the festival. Nadine Labaki, director of “Capernaum,” will receive a visionary award for her film. “Capernaum” will also represent Lebanon as the Foreign Language Submission for this year’s Oscars. Maggie Gyllenhaal will be recognized with the festival’s “Leading Actress” Award for her work in “The Kindergarten Teacher” from Sara Colangelo. 9-time Academy Award nominee Diane Warren will be given the “Impact” Award for her contributions and hundreds of songs in films. She will also perform some of her music at the festival. While Middleburg Film Festival may only be 6 years old, lineups like these make a festival on the rise.
