HMMA Announces Nominations with ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘Black Panther’ Leading the Way

The Hollywood Music in Media Awards, or HMMA precursor may become one of the more important precursors in the Fall season. This year, the Academy has instituted two additional shortlists for the Original Score and Original Song categories. The drop from literally hundreds of contenders to 15 shortlist nominees will be announced on Dec. 17, 2018, with the rest of the shortlists. This makes HMMA one of the potential indicators for which songs and scores we should anticipate on the Academy’s lists. Today, they announced their nominees.

Out the gate, the big surprise will likely be the inclusion of “Mary Poppins Returns” getting 3 nominations. That puts the Disney sequel in the same discussion as “A Star Is Born,” which is currently performing well in theaters. “Black Panther” outpaced both films with 4 nominations, including a score nomination for Ludwig Goransson. The genre split for both score and song likely brought a few nominees we will not see in the Academy lists, but for now, the HMMA nominations feel like a good jumping off point.

The full list is included below.
