There’s no question that Nicole Kidman continues to be one of the most talented actresses of her generation. She has a magnetism and excitement about her that makes you believe she can play any type of performance. The actresses continue to have a strong fan base, including many in Hollywood. This make the release of the first trailer for “Destroyer” an interesting prospect. While reviews for the film have been lukewarm, Kidman continues to stand above. After the first trailer, that becomes extremely apparent.
Directed by Karyn Kusama, the plot of “Destroyer” follows police officer Erin Bell (Kidman) as she hunts the killer of her partner (Sebastian Stan). The neo-noir follows Bell as her life falls apart around her, including the deterioration of her relationship with her daughter. Other strong actors pop into the film, including Tatiana Maslany, Toby Kebbell, and Bradley Whitford. With a very heavy lean into genre, the crime noir feels intense and dangerous, with Kidman shining in each second on screen.
However, the reviews for “Destroyer,” which made its world premiere at Telluride earlier this year, have not been strong. Our own Mark Johnson (who receives a quote in the trailer) notes that “‘Destroyer’ is a quirky and violent film that feels inconsistent in its approach.” It’s the inconsistency that seems to derail most of the positive looks at the film. Still, Kidman delivers another brilliant performance. Frankly, that might be all that is needed to turn “Destroyer” into an Oscar film, as the actress can keep the film in the spotlight. With a December release, expect this one to expand in January for larger audiences.
