LAIKA Studios continues to build toward an eventual Oscar win, releasing stop-motion marvels every few years to great success. Their last film, “Kubo and the Two Strings” broke out of the Animated Feature field and grabbed a Best Visual Effects nomination at the Oscars. Their other films, including “ParaNorman” and “Coraline” have been critical and populist successes. Now LAIKA is bringing together a new film that seeks to be a buddy road trip of sorts. Starring Zach Galifianakis, Hugh Jackman, and Zoe Saldana, we got our first trailer today for “Missing Link.”
“Missing Link” tells the story of Big Foot, legendary creatures and search for belonging. Galifianakis voices Mr. Link, a sasquatch-like creature living in the Pacific Northwest. When he is discovered by an adventurer, Sir Lionel Frost (Jackman), the two buddy up and begin searching for Link’s lost relatives in Shangri-La. The two become three when another adventurer, Adelina Fortnight (Saldana), joins the team with a map to their destination.
“Missing Link” brings together myths, monsters, and legends. There looks to have some trademark LAIKA comedic beats throughout, and there will likely of heart. The cast also features some fun performers, including Timothy Olyphant, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, and Matt Lucas. LAIKA veteran Chris Butler takes the reigns on this one. Butler co-directed “ParaNorman” and received a writing credit on “Kubo and the Two Strings” in 2016.
LAIKA continues to feel like it can win an Oscar in the coming years. “Missing Link” feels like it can be a bigger hit than many of their other films. While “Kubo” was their greatest critical success, it was also their lowest grossing film. However, with more family friendly content, Jackman and Galifianakis on board, expect a bigger turnout this time around.
