The upcoming feature “Everybody Knows” had many in the industry very excited prior to the Cannes Film Festival. The newest feature from Asghar Farhadi was always going to get a lot of attention. He had just directed his second picture to a Best Foreign Language film after “The Salesman” captured the prize. Yet Farhadi himself is Oscar-less. When “Everybody Knows” was announced, and confirmed to star Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, it seemed like a surefire contender. Today, Focus Features premiered its trailer for the upcoming Oscar season.
Fahardi makes his Spanish language debut with “Everybody Knows,” which features a true ensemble. There are a lot of talented actors beyond the headlining Cruz and Bardem. The cast also includes Bárbara Lennie, Ricardo Darín, Eduard Fernández, and more. The ensemble plays off each other and does their best with the mystery at the center of it all. Fahardi brings talented actors together and forces the characters to work with few answers. The thriller pushes all the characters to emotional outbursts, giving everyone showy acting moments with a strong tinge of melodrama. For some, this will certainly please.
At the same time, Focus Feature seems to have revealed its cards on this one. “Everybody Knows” will not truly release in theaters until February. This is not ideal for most Oscar films but could draw a bit of a crowd. However, “Everybody Knows” does not have the benefit of being in the foreign language race. It did not make the cut for either Spain or Iran (Farhadi’s home country) as their submission for Oscar. Now the feature must break through in the regular Oscar categories, and that seems unlikely. Still, Fahardi continues to draw admiration. With A-list actors in the cast, who knows what could happen?
