We’ve heard a lot of talk about the man in red returning to theaters this holiday season. The man in red of course is the popular anti-hero Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), who has quickly become a mainstream character. While the former cult hero’s fanbase has grown, so too has his ability to bring in audiences to support various issues and charities. For example, 20th Century Fox and Marvel are teaming up to release a more family-friendly version of “Deadpool 2” for the holidays. With some additional footage, and some of the violence removed, we get the first look at “Once Upon a Deadpool” with the new teaser trailer.
The choice to grab Fred Savage, playing himself, feels right for the “Once Upon a Deadpool” teaser. Sadly, in the last week, it also comes as an excellent homage to William Goldman. Goldman wrote both “The Princess Bride” book and movie. Additionally, Savage looks to be having a great time playing against type and verbally sparring with Deadpool. The theatrical run will be limited, and for every ticket sold, Fox will donate money to the Fudge Cancer organization. The slightly more PG-13 version of F*ck Cancer has graciously changed their name to fit the holiday season as well.
With Reynolds often using his star power to work for charitable causes, the re-release feels like a good fit. It works to remind movie-goers that “Deadpool 2” was one of the biggest releases of the year. It also adds a more family-friendly spin to the character known for foul language and violence. The short-run for the recut could also become a tradition for the franchise. It’ll be curious to see how “Once Upon a Deadpool” will actually do in theaters, but at bare minimum, it is all for a good cause.
