Amazon Studios Signs a First Look Deal with Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne’s ‘Animal Pictures’

One of the good things about television and film over the past couple of years is the increase of women headlining projects. Many talented women have finally been given the right to develop their own projects, a long overdue process. Two women who have consistently earned that right, but have yet to be able to make big projects, are Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne. Both have Emmy nominations under their belts. They’ve each held sustained runs on big time television shows. Finally, Amazon Studios has signed the two to an exclusive first-look deal to bring new television shows to Amazon Prime under their Animal Pictures production company.

Jennifer Salke, the Head of Amazon Studios, had this to say:

Maya and Natasha are proven talents in front of and behind the camera, and we are so excited to tap into this powerful creative brain trust and be in business with these fiercely funny and phenomenally smart women.

Both of the actresses have found success in the world of streaming content. Rudolph currently stars on “Forever” for Amazon Prime, giving her an established connection to the service. Meanwhile, Lyonne earned her own Emmy nomination for “Orange Is the New Black” as a “guest actress” on the show. Lyonne has years of experience as a character actress, and often elevates her material with comedy.

The two actresses are clearly talented, and it makes a lot of sense they could create some very cool projects together. With Amazon seeking to keep up with Netflix, they need to consolidate talent. Grabbing first looks of Animal Pictures seems like a great idea. While we likely won’t get a show starring both of the women, anything from their collective minds will be a welcome addition to television.
