One of the most violent and creepy films of the year, “Suspiria” will make your skin crawl. It is one of the most violent films of the year, but also pushed the boundaries of what a horror film can become. A big reason why the film has been so effective at grabbing critic’s attention is the makeup work. One of those responsible for that element of the film is Mark Coulier, a two-time Oscar winner. In a new featurette from Amazon Studios, he describes the process of making the prosthetics used in the film. One word of note though, the featurette dives heavily into SPOILERS. The subject matter is also extremely violent. However, if you are simply interested in the makeup effects, this is a great behind-the-scenes look at that craft.
Even from the still image above, you can see that very disturbing prosthetics were used to bring the world of “Suspiria” to life. The film is among the most unsettling of the year, building on an already disturbing world created by Dario Argento. In Luca Guadagnino‘s interpretation of “Suspiria,” the violence is far more gruesome and realistic. The makeup also helps build many characters, which makes the film really stand out in a very crowded field this year.
Not only does Tilda Swinton play Madame Blanc, who requires her own prosthetic work from time to time, but she plays two other characters. One of them, Dr. Joseph Klemperer, is a man. Her transformation is so convincing that she was able to convince some that the character was another actor entirely. Her third character is even more weird and terrifying as well. Just looking at Swinton, you can see that the work on this film was intense. That should help “Suspiria” rise in a tight race.
