It seems like Netflix has begun to adopt the British style of television for the holidays. The winter season is a great time to roll out specials for some of the most popular shows on TV and turn them into event programming. British shows like “Call the Midwife” and “Sherlock” have often received boosts from these specials. Netflix has pivoted away from Christmas specials on Bill Murray, and instead leaned into holiday programming in a big way. With new movies, like “The Christmas Chronicles, and reality competition shows like “Nailed It!” getting holiday specials, Netflix has made a big play. Now, you can add “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” to the list with “A Midwinter’s Tale” trailer releasing today.

There’s no doubt that “Chilling Adventures” has become a big push for Netflix. After a strong start to the first season, the second part of the season has been set for an April release. That’s a prime Emmy voting spot, and if the next half impresses, it could make an Emmy push. However, it also seems like “Chilling Adventures” has been built to draw buzz from the internet. It’s a popular show, and the strong support Netflix has shown seems to indicate it really does draw a lot of viewers.

The first season of the show took a much darker tone than the original “Archie” comics characters. Based on the new comic series that launched in 2014 and written by showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the tonal shift from the 90s sitcom feels authentic. The darker show still feels like popcorn entertainment that works to empower women,  people of color, and LGBTQ characters. With special episodes like this one starting become a regular occurrence for Netflix, “Chilling Adventures” could become event programming like “Stranger Things” in the future.
