2020 Oscar Circuit: Best Film Editing

OSCAR PREDICTIONS: Best Film Editing and Best Picture have a distinct relationship at the Academy Awards. A movie, more often than not, cannot win Best Picture without a Film Editing nomination. The last movie to win Best Picture without a Film Editing nomination was “Birdman” in 2014. The lack of an editing nomination is easy to attribute to the long take conceit, which also happens to be at work with this year’s “1917,” a Best Picture frontrunner with no Film Editing nomination.

This year, all of the Best Film Editing nominees are also Best Picture nominees. They are:

  • Andrew Buckland and Michael McCusker (“Ford v Ferrari”)
  • Thelma Schoonmaker (“The Irishman”)
  • Tom Eagles (“Jojo Rabbit”)
  • Jeff Groth (“Joker”)
  • Yang Jinmo (“Parasite”)

Jinmo and Eagles prevailed at this year’s ACE Eddie Awards, which is the guild celebrating film editors. Their awards are broken into genre – drama and comedy or musical – allowing “Parasite” to prevail in the former and “Jojo Rabbit” to win in the latter. It’s fair to assume the Oscar race is between “Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit.”

The ACE Eddies aren’t as predictive as other guilds. Below is a breakdown of the times the guild has correlated with Oscar over the past decade:

2010“The Social Network”“Alice and Wonderland”“The Social Network”
2011“The Descendants”“The Artist”“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
2012“Argo”“Silver Linings Playbook”“Argo”
2013“Captain Phillips”“American Hustle”“Gravity”
2014“Boyhood”“The Grand Budapest Hotel”“Whiplash”
2015“Mad Max: Fury Road”“The Big Short”“Mad Max: Fury Road”
2016“Arrival”“La La Land”“Hacksaw Ridge”
2017“Dunkirk”“I, Tonya”“Dunkirk”
2018“Bohemian Rhapsody”“The Favourite”“Bohemian Rhapsody”
2019“Parasite”“Jojo Rabbit”TBD

If the guild and Oscar match, it’s often with the drama category. Five times over the past decade, the ACE Eddie winner in the drama category has gone on to win the Oscar. The comedy or musical winner has never gone on to win the Oscar. Other times, the Academy likes to throw a surprise in like “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

There is a case to be made for all of the nominees to win Best Film Editing this year. “Ford v Ferrari” is quick and flashy, “Joker” has the most nominations in total and the breadth of footage for “The Irishman” makes it an achievement alone. The success of “Parasite” continues to linger and grow, and even though the ACE Eddie-to-Oscar correlation may not be as high as other guilds, this category seems to be leaning in Yang Jinmo’s favor.

WILL WIN: Yang Jinmo (“Parasite”)

SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED:  Jennifer Lame (“Marriage Story”)
