What’s on TV – Wednesday (1/2/19) – ‘Grown-ish’ Returns and ‘The Masked Singer’ Premieres

Between the big four networks, endless cable channels and all the new streaming options in the space, it’s harder than ever to keep up with TV. Our new series, “What’s On TV,” wants to help simplify things. We’ll recommend what shows you should check out, profile the new premieres of the day, and remind you what new episodes are on tonight. Whether you’re a cord cutter, Netflix binger, cable devotee or reality TV lover, we’ve got you covered at Awards Circuit.

“Grown-ish” Season 2 Premiere (Freeform) at 8 pm ET.

“Black-ish” may pick up all the Emmys, but “Grown-ish” has proven itself a worthy spinoff. Yara Shahidi always stood out on the ABC sitcom as Zoey Johnson, the stylishly aloof oldest daughter in the large Johnson clan. “Grown-ish” focuses in on her character as it sends Zoey to college. The supporting cast of classmates helps build a fun college environment and gives Shahidi good scene partners to play off of. Freeform has ordered 20 episodes for season 2 of “Grown-ish,” up from 13 episodes in season 1. For fans of “Black-ish,” it’s worth it to venture over to free form and check up on Zoey. Two new episodes air on Freeform back to back at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

“The Masked Singer” (FOX) at 9 pm ET

What’s behind the mask? FOX’s latest reality competition show, “The Masked Singer” pits 12 celebrities against each other in a competition to obscure their identity. Each celebrity sings while wearing a head to toe costumes, such as a peacock, rabbit, lion and even pineapple. Each week finds one celebrity eliminated. Upon elimination, the identity of the celebrity will be revealed. A four-person judges table plays detective to put together who is behind the mask.

The judges’ table features actor/comedian Ken Jeong, actress Jenny McCarthy, Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger and pop star Robin Thicke. Host Nick Cannon presides over the proceedings.

“The Masked Singer” isn’t the only premiere of the night on FOX. Gordon Ramsey returns with season two of his latest show “Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours To Hell And Back” at 8 p.m. The famously outspoken chef turns his ire towards struggling restaurants across America, as he hopes to turn them around in 24 hours. Tonight’s premiere takes place in New Orleans as Ramsey tackles The Trolley Stop Cafe.

Reality TV dominates the Lifetime Wednesday lineup. “Project Runway All Stars” (9 pm ET) assembles fourteen fan favorites from past seasons to vie for the title of the best fashion designer. Alyssa Milano returns as host, while Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman continue as judges. The reality competition drama continues at 10 pm ET with “American Beauty Stars” Season Two. The show pulls together 12 contestants competing to be the best hair and makeup artist.

VH1 premieres its Wednesday block of shows tonight. “Love & Hip Hop Miami” returns for its second season premiere at 8 p.m. This represents the most recent iteration of the “Love & Hip Hop” brand, which also includes New York, Atlanta, and Hollywood. The Season 5 premiere for “Black Ink Crew: Chicago” follows that up at 9 pm ET. The show follows a group of Windy City tattoo artists who hope to find success at 9Mag, the prestigious tattoo establishment.

The reality TV premieres continue on TLC. The two hour season 7 premiere of “My 600-lb Life” starts at 8 pm ET. Each episode chronicles a different person suffering from morbid obesity that decides to undergo high-risk gastric bypass surgery. Weight is also the topic of the next show in TLC’s Wednesday lineup. “Family By The Ton” airs its season 2 premiere at 10 p.m. The show follows the weight loss journey of cousins Naomi, Drew and Chitoka, who together weigh a collective 2,000 pounds.

Also premiering their new season tonight is “Live PD: Police Patrol” on A&E at 9 pm ET and “Beyond the Unknown” on The Travel Channel at 10 pm ET.
