2018 brought it share fair of breakout stars across the industry. Many actors made the transition from TV to film, while others came from seemingly nowhere. One of the most exciting awards handed out to the breakthrough stars across the industry are the EE BAFTA Rising Star Awards. Handed out yearly as part of the BAFTA ceremony, the public can vote on the eventual winner. Today, BAFTA announced the nominees for the 2019 prize, featuring some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. The group consists of Lakeith Stanfield, Cynthia Erivo, Letitia Wright, Barry Keoghan, and Jessie Buckley.
Stanfield took the reigns of “Sorry to Bother You,” leading the indie hit to a high level of acclaim. He also starred in “Atlanta” on FX and appeared in several other films in 2018. Erivo went from newcomer to a star in film this year, appearing in her first two features. “Bad Times at the El Royale” and “Widows” provided her a pair of showcases. Letitia Wright became an instant star after “Black Panther” made Shuri one of the most popular characters in the MCU. Barry Keoghan followed up a stellar 2017 by headlining “American Animals” at Sundance and at the Spring Festival circuit. Finally, Jessie Buckley drew strong reviews for “Beast” earlier this year. She already has films on the horizon in 2019 as well.
The group of performers had some of the very best films of 2018. Some will also make our list for the Breakthrough Performers of 2018, while Keoghan already may our list in 2017.
