Jason Reitman has answered a call to direct a new “Ghostbusters” movie. It’s a reboot that Reitman has apparently been working on in secret. But it definitely isn’t a secret any longer. Jason’s father, Ivan Reitman, helmed the original “Ghostbusters” from 1984. So, he gets to inherit his mantle.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony said that this film will be a continuation of the original story. Also, it will be a passing of the torch both inside and out. So, besides Jason Reitman directing his father’s property, it’ll likely have a new team of ghost hunters.
However, it’s unclear if the original members will return. As for the new team, Reitman is allegedly seeking to cast four teens: two guys and two girls. As we all know, Sony tried rebooting “Ghostbusters” with an all-female team three years ago. But with its box office underperformance and unfortunate Internet backlash, it didn’t fare too well. However, it is curious to see how this film will fare with a more mixed team.
Reitman is coming off a rather underwhelming year. “The Front Runner” came and went while “Tully” didn’t make much noise. Although, “Tully” did get a Golden Globe nomination for Charlize Theron’s performance. So, his directing talents remain present. But he hasn’t escaped his box office slump. If any project can get him out of it, this would be it.
Anyhow, Reitman co-wrote the script with Gil Kenan who helmed the animated feature “Monster House” back in 2006. The film is set to start filming this summer with a 2020 release date being eyed.
