Though it’s uncertain whether the Academy will recognize Toni Collette’s outstanding turn in Ari Aster’s horror stunner “Hereditary,” the actress is ready to delve into genre once again. Colette has been cast in the upcoming sci-fi thriller “Stowaway,” where she will star alongside Anna Kendrick.
The project is the sophomore effort from filmmaking duo Joe Penna and Ryan Morrison, whose. Penna, a Brazilian director, premiered his debut feature “Arctic” at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, which was also co-written with Morrison. Their survival drama starred Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen and opens stateside this month.
For their new venture, the storytellers are headed to outer space where Colette and Kendrick will be faced with a dangerous and exhilarating story. The plot will center on a spaceship traveling to Mars and whose mission is put at risk by an uninvited guest. Facing less than favorable circumstances, two highly skilled women, a medical researcher (Kendrick) and a commander (Collette) face-off as they try to survive.
Both actresses had an accomplished year in 2018 with Collette starring in “Hearts Beat Loud” and the series “Wanderlust,” aside from Aster’s critically acclaimed debut. On the other hand, Kendrick had fun in Paul Feig’s tonally peculiar “A Simple Favor,” opposite Blake Lively.”Stowaway” is currently in pre-production.
As of now, no other cast members have been announced. It appears that both Penna and Morrison have an affinity for narratives in inhospitable spaces and with a minimal amount of characters. “Arctic” only features Mikkelsen and another actor in a small part.
