WATCH: ‘Fast Color’ Turns Gugu Mbatha-Raw Into a Superhero

In the age of superhero films, many writers and directors have begun to create their own heroes. After all, big companies like Marvel and DC can only produce so many films each year. Besides, original stories from new storytellers can often allow for more nuanced and character introspection. On the same weekend that M. Night Shyamalan continues his own superhero universe with “Glass,” Gugu Mbatha-Raw gets her time in the sun. The trailer for her next starring role, “Fast Color,” dropped and it looks very cool.

Directed and co-written by Julia Hart, you can find the synopsis for “Fast Color” below:

“Fast Color” stars Mbatha-Raw as a woman who comes into her own after discovering she has superhuman abilities. When her powers are discovered, the woman is forced to abandon her family in order to protect them. Years later, her mission to remain unseen brings her back home.

Also starring in the film with Mbatha-Raw are Lorraine ToussaintSaniyya SidneyChristopher Denham, and David Strathairn. The film received strong praise on the festival, especially for Mbatha-Raw’s performance. With a small sample size, the film already has an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was held for the following year and hopes to capitalize on an early release date.

For Mbatha-Raw, the role represents another starring role for her. Last year the “Cloverfield Paradox” misstep seemed to be mostly forgotten by March. Regardless, Mbatha-Raw was the issue with the film. She also starred in “Irraplaceable You” and appeared in “A Wrinkle in Time” last year. She has a few big projects on the horizon as well. “Come Away” will be on the way sometime in the future, and features a high concept idea and will have a large ensemble to represent the film. For Mbatha-Raw, 2019 could be a big year.
