Today would have been Tobe Hooper‘s 76th birthday. To honor the man who gave us “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” it seems only appropriate to look at horror filmmakers. Namely, we want to know who your favorite director or directors within the genre are. The late great Hooper certainly applies, but who else would you pick?
Classic auteurs like Hooper represent a ton of fantastic choices. John Carpenter, Wes Craven, or even Alfred Hitchcock are unimpeachable picks. That’s only the tip of the iceberg. Plenty of people would have Dario Argento, David Cronenberg, George A. Romero, or James Whale at the tops of their lists. These are legends, with handprints all over the genre. Without them, horror as a cinematic form would not be anything like what it is today. They’re literal godfathers of the medium.
Among the many modern day masters, a lot are not sticking strictly to horror. Names like Ari Aster, David Robert Mitchell, Jordan Peele, James Wan, and Adam Wingard have made some amazing scary movies, but their output seems to reach beyond that. The same goes for Tim Burton, Gulliermo del Toro, Eli Roth, and so on. Horror, especially on an independent level, is going through a bit of an evolution. That makes it an exciting time to be a fan, especially with some of the above names working int he field.
On what would have been Tobe Hooper’s birthday, we put this interesting question to you. Who are some of your favorite horror auteurs? Let us know which names do it for you!
