Director Christopher Nolan has a love/hate relationship with the Oscar, but he broke through in a big way last year. The director finally picked up his first Best Director nomination for his work on “Dunkirk,” a war epic that told the story of Great Brittain’s finest military moment. The film went on to win three Oscars on the night and continued to build momentum for Nolan’s eventual director win. With “Dunkirk” breaking through in a major way last year, many of wondered when Nolan would jump back into the director’s chair. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Nolan has set his next date with Warner Bros.
According to the article, Nolan will release his next feature on July 17, 2020. The director has proven to have success in the summer, both with Oscar and at the box office. All but two of his films, “The Prestige” and “Interstellar,” have released over the summer. With “Dunkirk,” Nolan proved he could keep momentum for the Oscar run. That film released on July 21, 2017, and went on to earn eight nominations.
For Oscar fans, Nolan continues to be a fascination. As a technical director, there might be no equal on a movie to movie basis. Talent flocks to Nolan, even when the public knows nothing about his movies. In the case of his 2020 release, we have no title, plot descriptions, or talent attached. However, we know that frequent collaborators, including Hans Zimmer, Hoyte Van Hoytema, and Lee Smith are likely on board. We know actors will line-up to work with him, and with the release of the film coming in the next 18 months, expect to hear casting news in the near future. Expect an A-list cast, with a high concept story to boot.
