We’re days away from the Oscar ceremony but Spike Lee already has his next project in the works. According to Variety, Netflix is in talks to distribute the film known as “Da 5 Bloods.” Also, Chadwick Boseman is currently in negotiations to star.
In addition to Boseman, Jean Reno and Delroy Lindo are in talks to star as well. Reno is best known for “The Professional” where he plays Leon, a professional hitman. As for Lindo, this would mark his fourth collaboration with Lee. The two have previously collaborated on “Clockers,” “Crooklyn,” and “Malcolm X.”
For the most part, story details on “Da 5 Bloods” are unknown. However, it follows a group of Vietnam veterans returning to the jungle to find their lost innocence. Sources close to Variety say that production should begin next month once Oscar campaigning for “BlacKkKlansman” finally completes.
Should Netflix acquire the rights, “Da 5 Bloods” would be Lee’s first directing gig for the streaming service. He’s currently involved in the TV adaptation of “She’s Gotta Have It” as an executive producer. But now, he may step into the director’s chair. Not to mention, this potentially makes Lee the latest renowned filmmaker to direct for Netflix. Names like Alfonso Cuaron, The Coen Brothers, and Paul Greengrass have previously directed for them. Now, we can add Lee to the growing roster as well.
As for Chadwick Boseman, this project comes at an exciting time for him. He’s coming off the success of “Black Panther” which was a Best Picture nominee and a box office success. So, Boseman collaborating with the iconic Spike Lee is quite an intriguing prospect.
