Last year, President’s Day Weekend was one of the biggest weekends of the year. That’s because it featured the opening of “Black Panther,” one of the year’s biggest hits. Without that sort of tentpole this year, this President’s Day Weekend looks like the worst in 15 years. “Alita: Battle Angel” took the box office crown, but totals were down across the board.
“Alita: Battle Angel” opened with a $27.8M three-day frame. That figure puts it ahead of studio estimates, but represents a disappointment for a film with a production budget of $170M. The domestic haul now stands at $36M and the worldwide total has reached $130M. The film is reported to need to reach $500-550M in order to break even, so all of these numbers suggest it will be one of the year’s biggest money losers.
Finishing in second place this weekend is “The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part” with an estimated $21.2M. This brings the film’s domestic total to $62.7M. This represents a decline of roughly 38% from its opening weekend, as the film continues to track behind “The LEGO Movie” and “The LEGO Batman Movie.”
Opening in third place, “Isn’t It Romantic” clocked in at around $14.2M. This is just short of Rebel Wilson‘s last romantic comedy, “How to Be Single,” which pulled in $17.9M in its opening weekend and finished with $46.9M domestically. Based on that comp, “Isn’t It Romantic” looks likely to finish with a total that falls just short of $40M.
Taraji P Henson‘s “What Men Want” posted one of the larger declines in the top ten. It brought in just short of $11M this weekend, which represents a 40% drop from its opening weekend. The film’s total now stands at $36.2M.
The weekend’s final wide opening, “Happy Death Day 2U” rounds out the top five with just short of $10M. This is less than half of what its predecessor grossed in its opening weekend, which suggests this sequel will fall well short of the original’s $55.7M domestic haul. It looks like audiences were not eager to see more of this franchise. With a production budget of just $9M, however, the film is still likely to be profitable for Universal
The rest of the top ten features holdovers like “Cold Pursuit” with $6M, “The Upside” with $5.6M, “Glass” with $3.9M, “The Prodigy” with $3.2M and “Green Book” with $2.7M.
