A few years ago, DC and Warner Brothers were dreaming of Batman and Superman leading the charge for them. Fast forward to 2019, those characters are being re-evaluated, with “Aquaman” and “Wonder Woman” now their show ponies. Times change. While the A-list characters are being fumbled with, a second tier one like “Aquaman” is getting a sequel going already. Now, we even know when it will be coming out. You’ll have to wait a while, but it’s coming.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Aquaman 2” will be hitting theaters on Dec. 16, 2022. It’ll come four years after the character swam into audience’s hearts. The sequel comes on the heels of the first one grossing over $1 Billion worldwide at the box office. Jason Momoa will return as the title character (also known as Arthur Curry), while “Aquaman” writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is coming back to pen the sequel. So far, James Wan is not officially signed on to direct, though he’s making a deal to at least produce. Presumably, Warner Brothers will back up a truck full of money to get him to agree to come back.
“Aquaman 2” (or whatever it ends up being called) currently has that 2022 release date all to itself. There’s also a spinoff called “The Trench” in development to make a Cinematic Universe within this one. Even just a year ago, that would have been a shocking couple of sentences to write. It remains to be seen if other tentpoles will stay away or not, but this franchise is now a true behemoth for DC and WB. Stay tuned for plenty more on this one over the next few years.
