What’s on TV? – Sunday (3/17/19) – ‘Billions’ Is Back & Catch Up on ‘The Quiet Man’ for Circuit Madness

You can catch up your Circuit Madness watchlist tonight with “The Quiet Man” on TCM. “Billions” also returns tonight, taking up the mantle of the prestige drama to watch for the next few weeks. Finally, “X2” and “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” offer some great blockbuster showcases.

Pick of the Day

The Quiet Man” on  TCM at 8 PM

John Ford won his fourth Oscar for Best Director with the 1952 classic. Starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, “The Quiet Man” features beautiful cinematography and a fun storyline. On its way to seven Oscar nominations, Ford pushed Victor McLaglen into Supporting Actress, Frank Nugent into Adapted Screenplay, and the film int “Best Picture.” Perhaps most important of all, Ford’s Oscar win for “The Quiet Man” can be voted on during the second round of Circuit Madness next week! Watch it tonight so you can tick another Best Director prize off your list.

What’s Premiering?

“Billions” on Showtime at 9 PM

One of the best Showtime series, “Billions” makes it return. The pop drama traffics in being one of the most melodramatic and camp soap operas on a premium network. This season, Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis are joining forces to take down their enemies. Asia Kate Dillon and David Costabile each give standout performances on a week to week basis as well. With some space in the Outstanding Drama Series race this year, could “Billions” finally capitalize and find its way to the Emmys? Check out the season premiere tonight, and catch up on Showtime.

Movies on TV

“Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” on TNT at 8 PM

One word: Ewoks. Whether you think they were the cutest thing added to the “Star Wars” universe or the beginning of the end, they take center stage in “Return of Jedi” from 1983. Closing the chapter on the first “Star Wars” trilogy, the overtones of America, Vietnam, and war were clearly placed into the text of the franchise. The fates of dozens of “Star Wars” favorites were sealed in this one, including Boba Fett, Jabba the Hut, and of course, Darth Vader himself.

“X2” on HBO2 at 9 PM

While Marvel has emerged as a powerhouse of comic book movie creations, the X-Men and Sam Raimi Spider-Man franchises paved the way. “X2” held the title for the best comic book film for years. The combined forces of Patrick Stewart‘s Professor Xavier, Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine, and Ian McKellan‘s Magneto created quite the triumvirate. Perhaps the most underrated aspect of “X2” remains the killer performance from Brian Cox, who drips evil as William Stryker. Easily the best X-Men film until “Logan,” “X2” remains a standout moment for comic book movies. It’s a shame Bryan Singer directed.
