Amazon Acquires Park Chan-wook’s ‘The Brigands of Rattlecreek’

One of the most stylish and visceral filmmakers on the planet is Park Chan-wook. The Korean auteur has wowed audiences with work that includes “The Handmaiden,” “Oldboy,” and “Stoker.” For this next project, Chan-wook is going to be taking a script that’s long been on The Black List and put his signature spin on it. Not only that, now we know who will be releasing it, once it gets made.

According to Collider, Amazon has picked up Chan-wook’s upcoming “The Brigands of Rattlecreek,” a western penned by none other than filmmaker in his own right S. Craig Zahler. Chan-wook has been trying to make this movie for nearly a decade now, so this is an important next step. Furthermore, he’s eyeing Matthew McConaughey for one of the lead roles.

Here is a bit about the film:

Bradley Fischer (Shutter Island) will produce the film, which follows a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town. Zahler’s script topped the 2006 Black List but has languished in development, likely due to its violent content.

Sources say that Amazon and Fischer are courting Matthew McConaughey to play the doctor opposite another A-lister as the sheriff, though it remains early on the casting front and no actors have a closed deal at this time. Still, the fact that Amazon has swooped in to rescue this highly-regarded project, which puts them in business with a world-class filmmaker who’s comfortable with violent material, is great news for genre fans.

“The Brigands of  Rattlecreek” could well end up teaming Chan-wook, McConaughey, and Zahler. That’s a pairing that could make for a hell of a unique western.
