Filming Has Begun For Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’

The success of “Arrival” made the cinematic world into Denis Villeneuve‘s oyster. With the ability to essentially get the green light for any project he desired, the filmmaker has opted to tackle a new “Dune” adaptation. Pursued for the James Bond directing gig, Villeneuve instead focused his attention on trying to do what Alejandro Jodorowsky and David Lynch could not. Warner Bros. is game to let him try, as the movie is getting underway.

WB has announced that filming on “Dune” has officially begun. Villeneuve is in the director’s chair, as well as having co-written the script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. Greg Frasier is behind the camera handling cinematography, while the score will be done by Hans Zimmer. As for the cast, Timothée Chalamet leads the way, with other players including Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgård, and more.

Here is the film synopsis, according to The Playlist:

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

“Dune” is envisioned by Villeneuve as the start of a franchise. Frank Herbert‘s novel of the same name has vexed many creatives before, though if anyone can do it justice, Villeneuve seems like the candidate for the job.
