Round of 32

This sets up some fun battles in the next round. Let’s highlight a few of them.

  • Francis Ford Coppola eliminated Alfonso Cuarón in the last round and looks to completely eliminate him from the tournament in this one. The two face off in the Bob Hope Division.
  • Damien Chazelle was the only low seed to win his matchup in the Billy Crystal division. Chazelle’s win for “La La Land” faces off against Victor Fleming in the next round.
  • Kathryn Bigelow defeated her ex-husband James Cameron to become the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director. She has to beat him again in order to keep going in Circuit Madness.
  • Jonathan Demme almost shut out Oliver Stone in the last round. Stone only picked up a single vote. Now he’s going up against Milos Forman and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
  • Forman, Steven Spielberg, David Lean, and Robert Wise each have two contenders remaining in Circuit Madness. Each is also the higher seed in the Round of 32 matchups.
