Sony Pictures Entertainment and Rovio Animation have released the second trailer to the sequel “The Angry Birds Movie 2.” The film will see the pigs and birds try to coexist as they unite as a team to protect their island from new, quirky threats.
What skyrocketed to popularity as first a video game, 2016’s “The Angry Birds Movie,” directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, was a success at the box office. It grossed over $352 million worldwide and about $170 million domestically. Although mildly entertaining for a video game to film adaptation, it received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, marking it generally mediocre.
Tony Leondis directs the animated sequel along with co-director John Rice. Leondis is better known as the director behind the 2017 flop, “The Emoji Movie,” a film that failed critically by its Rotten Tomatoes score of 7%. Leondis was also part of the animation and art departments on film favorites like “The Prince of Egypt,” “The Road to El Dorado,” and other animated videos. Rice lends his creative chops to the direction, supported by his work in the departments of animation and art direction from works such as “The Simpsons Movie” and the “King of the Hill” television series.
A departure from the reigns of the previous film’s directors, “The Angry Birds Movie 2” looks to smash its predecessor’s RT score of 44%. Peter Ackerman pens the script this time around, following the form of his previous scripts from the “Ice Age” installments.
New voices tagging along for the journey include Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, Rachel Bloom, Brooklynn Prince, and Nicki Minaj. Returning cast members include Peter Dinklage as Mighty Eagle, Jason Sudeikis as Red, Bill Hader as Leonard, Josh Gad as Chuck and Danny McBride as Bomb.
