We’re back for Circuit Madness 2019 Directors! The Round of 32 really shook up the tournament. Some big hitters went down, while some newer wins established their popularity with the Awards Circuit readership. The next round is already open for voting, so click below to make your voice heard.

This round lived up to the Circuit Madness name. Check out the results below!

Bob Hope Division

  • (1) Francis Ford Coppola – “The Godfather Part II” eliminates Alfonso Cuarón – “Gravity” for the second week in a row – 73% to 27%
  • (7) Joseph L. Mankiewicz – “All About Eve” upsets (2) Woody Allen – “Annie Hall” with a 56% to 44% victory
  • (3) Stephen Spielberg – “Saving Private Ryan” defeats (6) Joel & Ethan Coen – “No Country for Old Men” 57% to 43%
  • (5) Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins – “West Side Story” knock out the iconic Frank Capra – “It Happened One Night”

Billy Crystal Division

  • (8) Peter Jackson – “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” surprises (1) David Lean – “Lawrence of Arabia” with a massive upset – 51% to 49%
  • (10) Damien Chazelle – “La La Land” continues to madness with a win over (2) Victor Fleming – “Gone with the Wind” – 54% to 46%
  • (6) Alejandro González Iñárritu – “Birdman” joins in the fun with a victory over (3) Robert Zemeckis – “Forrest Gump”
  • (4) Robert Wise – “The Sound of Music” survived the bloodbath of the Billy Crystal Division, defeating (5) William Wyler – “Ben-Hur” 58% to 42%

Johnny Carson Division

  • (1) Michael Curtiz – “Casablanca” lays down the law over (9) Oliver Stone – “Platoon”
  • (10) Ang Lee – “Brokeback Mountain” knocks out (2) Elia Kazan – “On the Waterfront” with a 54% to 46% win
  • (3) Milos Forman – “Amadeus” flexes its muscles over (11) Sam Mendes – “America Beauty” – 59% to 41%
  • (5) Kathryn Bigelow – “The Hurt Locker” is Queen of the World over (4) James Cameron – “Titanic” with a 52% to 48%

Whoopi Goldberg Division

  • (1) Steven Spielberg – “Schindler’s List” defeats his longtime rival (9) Martin Scorsese – “The Departed” with a 78% to 22% win
  • (2) Mike Nichols – “The Graduate” remains a legend with a win over (10) Steven Soderberg – “Traffic”
  • (3) David Lean – “The Bridge on the River Kwai” bounces back with a win over (6) Billy Wilder – “The Apartment”
  • (5) Jonathan Demme – “The Silence of the Lambs” continues his reign of terror over (4) Milos Forman – “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” – 64% to 36%

Circuit Madness Sweet 16 Opens for Voting

Let’s check out some of the interesting tidbits as we begin the next round!

  • Three of the Four #1 seeds made the Sweet 16, with David Lean’s win for “Lawrence of Arabia” dropping last round. However, Lean stays in the tournament with “The Bridge on the River Kwai”
  • Steven Spielberg and Jonathan Demme have fought each other in the Awards Circuit Community before. Demme’s “Philadelphia” edged out “Schindler’s List” for ACCA 1993’s Best Picture, but Spielberg won for his other 1993 film “Jurassic Park.” Now Spielberg and Demme face off again. Who will win this round?
  • Ang Lee and Damien Chazelle both enter the Sweet 16 as the lowest seeds left in the tournament. They each received a 10-seed at the start of the tournament.
  • Robert Wise and Steven Spielberg each have two entries left in the tournament. Lean and Forman each dropped one of their entries, but advanced with their second entry.
