‘Black Panther’ Wins Big at NAACP Image Awards

The 50th annual NAACP Image Awards winners were revealed and broadcasted live Saturday evening from The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Among winners, “Black Panther” and “Black-ish” came out on top, leading the television and film categories.

The NAACP is a civil rights-centered organization that honors culture and creativity within the community every year across the film, television, music, culture and broadcast categories. This year it was hosted by comedian and star of “Black-ish,” Anthony Anderson.

Ryan Coogler– directed superhero phenomenon “Black Panther” garnered a total of eight wins that night. This includes Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture for Coogler and Joe Robert Cole, Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Supporting Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Danai Gurira and Outstanding Motion Picture.

ABC Network’s comedy “Black-ish” scored big wins in the television realm, scoring a total of five wins. These include Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for Anderson, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for Tracee Ellis Ross and Outstanding Comedy Series.

Moreover, some independent wins did not go unnoticed. Annapurna Pictures and Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” won the award for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture. Related, recent Oscar winner Regina King accepted the award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special for her work in the Netflix crime drama “Seven Seconds.” HBO’s stunning and emotional “Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland” took home the award for Outstanding Documentary (Television). Donald Glover took home the award for Outstanding Directing in A Comedy Series for FX Networks‘ original “Atlanta.”
