WATCH: Sophie Turner Embraces the Dark in Final Trailer for ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’

With six weeks to go before “Dark Phoenix” hits theaters, 20th Century Fox has released the final trailer for the upcoming “X-Men” sequel.

The final X-Men film produced by the studio before the Disney merger was completed, “Dark Phoenix” delves into the world of Jean Grey, whose becomes more powerful, but unstable during a rescue mission. Guided by a mysterious woman known only as Smith, Jean becomes a dangerous enemy to those she once considered friends.

Sophie Turner stars as Jean Grey/Phoenix, in a role she first took up in “X-Men: Apocalypse” in 2016. Turner made her onscreen debut as Sansa Stark in the HBO mega hit, “Game of Thrones,” at age 15. Eight years later, she plays one of the show’s most significant roles, while also building a strong filmography on the big screen.

Jessica Chastain takes up the role of Smith, whose true identity and origin are not yet known. Smith is assumed to be a shapeshifter, which leads many to speculate that she may, in fact, be a Skrull. The Skrulls play an important part in the MCU, and this could be a tie-in when the X-Men eventually join forces with the Avengers in a move that Kevin Feige has suggested may happen down the road.

Many previous X-Men reprise their roles from earlier films. Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy return to guide their crews of mutants as Magneto and Charles Xavier. Nicholas Hoult is back as Beast. Jennifer Lawrence takes up the mantel of Mystique for the fourth time. Evan Peters is Quicksilver, Kodi Smit-McPhee is Nightcrawler, Alexandra Shipp is Storm, and Tye Sheridan is Cyclops.

Simon Kinberg, who produced the Oscar-nominated “Logan,” takes his first turn in the director’s chair. Kingberg has written and produced several films in the X-Men universe, including “X-Men: The Last Stand” in 2006. He has also worked on several Star Wars projects, and Jordan Peele’s revival of “The Twilight Zone.” Kingberg also wrote the script, which is based on “The Dark Phoenix Saga” comic series.

“Dark Phoenix” is distributed by 20th Century Fox and will be in theaters on June 6.
