Ang Lee directs Will Smith in "Gemini Man"

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media have released the first official trailer for Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man,” starring Will Smith.

The action film stars Smith as Henry, an assassin who comes face-to-face with a younger clone of himself. This sounds vaguely familiar to Rian Johnson’s “Looper,” but director Ang Lee attempts to introduce “Gemini Man” as a story that looks at internal conflict. Further, Lee’s affinity for digital technology carries over from his previous work in “Life of Pi” and 2003’s “Hulk.” WETA Digital hops on board to create a fleshed out, formidable assassin to Smith’s on screen character.

As detailed by Deadline:

In statements released to the press with today’s trailer, Lee says new digital technology allowed the film to be made. “This story is not one that could have been told with cinema as we know it,” the director said, explaining that new digital tech allowed for a credible “younger and older Will Smith” sharing the screen.

Set to a slow rendition of “Forever Young,” the trailer for Lee’s “Gemini Man” places Smith’s character against a younger version of himself. His character is outsmarted as the other assassin (also himself) predicts his every move. It’s a cat and mouse chase as the characters collide, but what else does Lee have up his sleeve with this seemingly generic sci-fi premise? Lee has had luck in the past with his Best Achievement in Directing Oscar wins for both “Brokeback Mountain” and “Life of Pi.”

The cast of “Gemini Man” includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“10 Cloverfield Lane”), Clive Owen (“Children of Men”), Benedict Wong (“Doctor Strange”) and Douglas Hodge (“Red Sparrow”). Writing credits on the film include Billy Ray, Jonathan Hensleigh, Darren Lemke, Andrew Niccol, Stephen J. Rivele, Christopher Wilkinson and David Benioff.

“Gemini Man” is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Skydance Media. It is being distributed by Paramount Pictures. The latest from Ang Lee strikes into theaters October 4.
