‘Honeyland’ and ‘Monos’ Among Winners at 2019 Montclair Film Festival

The eighth annual Montclair Film Festival (MFF) announced its 2019 award winners during a ceremony Saturday, May 11. This year’s edition of the festival featured four competitive categories: Fiction, Documentary, Future/Now, and New Jersey Filmmaking.

Winners include the Sundance-premiering “Monos,” from director Alejandro Landes, which won the Fiction Feature Competition. Over in the documentary categories, the Bruce Sinofsky Prize went to “Honeyland,” the story of the last female bee hunter in Europe who attempts to restore balance. The documentary also premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and even took home three prizes from Park City, including best cinematography and documentary in world cinema.

Other special competitions at Montclair Film festival include the New Jersey Film Award, which was given to “Life with Layla,” directed by Ken Spooner and Mike Mee. The award recognizes integral, budding talents from New Jersey filmmakers. The festival’s Future/Now Special Jury Prize went to Zora Howard for her work in writing the feature film “Premature,” in which she also stars as the lead. The special award is given to recognize the American low-budget independent filmmaking creatives who perform outstandingly within their first or second feature films.

From the press release:

“The films selected by our juries showcase the diverse voices, ideas, and styles that we hope reflect the festival’s commitment to the full range of cinematic storytelling,” said Montclair Film Executive Director Tom Hall. “We thank and congratulate all of the filmmakers who shared their films with the festival and our audiences this year.”
