Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the fifth season of “Black Mirror,” the award-winning sci-fi series returning to Netflix next month. The upcoming season is slated for a three-episode run with new cast members added to the fold.
Technology has managed to rule our lives since its conception and in “Black Mirror,” showrunner Charlie Booker makes this concept morally complex. Through its anthology structure, the show visits different stories set in modern and post-apocalyptic settings alike. The one true connective tissue of the series is its focus on the morally grey repercussions of technology and power with it. From an existence of likeability status (“Nosedive”) to grave video game simulation(“Playtest”), the series hits pointed measures of our ongoing exploration of tech and all the things it could bring us in an alternate existence. The show leans toward being a set of cautionary tales, ones with compelling writing and solid performances.
As shown in the trailer, a new cast arrives, and audiences might recognize some of them. The cast includes Anthony Mackie (“Avengers: Endgame”), Miley Cyrus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Ludi Lin.
“Black Mirror” is a multiple BAFTA nominee and Primetime Emmy winner. Among its award-winning and nominated episodes include the space-warped “USS Callister,” the magnetizing “San Junipero,” Nosedive” and “Black Museum.” Critics recognize the show for its dramatic layers, its details in costume design, cinematography, show writing. The new season returns from the latest “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” special, an interactive film that landed on Netflix in December of last year. It was nominated for Best Single Drama at the BAFTA TV Awards.
The hit series is produced by Zeppotron and Channel 4 Television Corporation for the UK. It’s distributed worldwide through Netflix’s streaming platform. The fifth season of “Black Mirror” hits Netflix streaming June 5.
