Nisha Ganatra’s Sundance Hit ‘Late Night’ to Release Wide a Week Later

Exclusively reported by Deadline, Nisha Ganatra‘s breakout Sundance hit “Late Night,” starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson, will now be pushed for wide release a week later. It’s slated to hit theaters June 14 instead of its previous June 7 date.

The comedy, executive produced and written by Kaling, had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It sold to Amazon Studios for distribution in a hefty $13 million closing deal. It’s now prepped for release alongside other summer contenders “Men in Black: International” and Jim Jarmusch’s Cannes opener “The Dead Don’t Die.”

From the Deadline article:

Directed by Nisha Ganatra, Late Night tells the story of a wet-behind-her-ears wannabe TV comedy writer, Molly Patel (Kaling), who lands the gig of a lifetime on the writing staff of a broadcast’s network late-night talk show. However, she’s up against an all-male staff and aging host Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson), who is out of her time. Patel and Newbury find mentoring in each other as they both aim to break the glass ceiling. In writing the film, Kaling drew inspiration from such movies as Mike Nichols’ Working Girl.

A graduate of New York University film school, Ganatra directs her first feature film after doing extensive television work. Her past work includes shows like “The Last Man on Earth,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” “Girls,” “Dear White People” and “The Mindy Project,” to name a few. She directs her consistent collaborator Kaling, who has her own piece of home in the television industry.

Kaling, a multiple Emmy nominee herself, was seen in last year’s fun summer caper “Ocean’s Eight” and the film adaptation of “A Wrinkle in Time.” Kaling’s costar in “Late Night,” Emma Thompson will be having a grand time as fans will be seeing double of her at the box office. The two-time Oscar winner stars as a powerful late night talk host and then as veteran Agent O in a sci-fi franchise.

“Late Night” is distributed by Amazon Studios and will have its wide release June 14.
