Sony Pictures have released exclusive first look images into Greta Gerwig‘s “Little Women” adaptation. In a Vanity Fair exclusive, Gerwig shared images and insights into the production that went behind this revitalized story about four sisters coming of age in a post-Civil War society. In some aspects, Gerwig has seems to have found her own footing in adapting Louisa May Alcott’s 1968 and ’69 two-volume novel.

Once introduced to the screen by Gillian Armstrong in 1994, the film starred Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, Claire Danes, Trini Alvarado and Kirsten Dunst. In the Vanity Fair piece, it’s mentioned that the original film was Saoirse Ronan’s introduction to the story. By way of Gerwig’s direction, all the characters of the book are now fleshed out in ways that take from pieces of Gerwig’s own life and relation to them.

From the VF article:

“This feels like autobiography,” Gerwig says. “When you live through a book, it almost becomes the landscape of your inner life. … It becomes part of you, in a profound way.”

“They were just people. They were not in a period piece, they were just living,” Gerwig says. “They were the most modern people who had ever existed, up till that point.”

Revisiting the material, Gerwig was struck by the ambitions of the March sisters, who grow up using each other and their quiet country life as creative inspirations. “Every single one of them took what they did very seriously,” Gerwig says, pointing out that each sister has an art form. Jo writes, Meg acts, Amy paints, and Beth plays piano. One of the most playful, free moments in the novel is when the sisters come together to put on an amateur production of Jo’s latest romantic play, The Witch’s Curse, an Operatic Tragedy. The girls all play three or four characters, and construct the set, props, and costumes themselves. In Gerwig’s vision, the curtains are made of quilts and the floor is scattered with forest leaves; cardboard stars hang from the ceiling.

Gerwig is an eclectic and blossoming writer, director and actress. In collaboration with Noah Baumbach, she’s stood out in works like “Frances Ha,” which she co-wrote. She starred in “Mistress America” and the Oscar-nominated “20th Century Women.” Gerwig herself was nominated for two Oscars for her directorial debut in “Lady Bird,” which stars leading lady Ronan. The film was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Gerwig now takes the helm in adapting the novel, one that will be kept under close anticipation over the awards banter.

The film stars Emma Watson as Meg, Florence Pugh as Amy, Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Eliza Scanlen as Beth and Timothee Chalamet as Laurie. “Little Women” is produced and distributed by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment. It will release in theaters December 25. Check out the first look stills below!
