What’s On TV? – Sunday (6/23/2019) – A Night of Finales Includes Starz’s ‘The Spanish Princess’

This Sunday, we say goodbye to three popular shows with the season finales of “Luther”, “Vida”, and “The Spanish Princess” airing this evening. There’s also the 19th Annual BET Awards celebrating African-American contributions to entertainment and sports over the past year, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup carries on with the second day in the Round of 16.

“The Spanish Princess” (Starz) at 8:00 PM EDT

The story of “The Spanish Princess” comes to a temporary close this evening. It was originally meant to be a limited series like “The White Queen” and “The White Princess” before it. But earlier this month Starz announced that it would be receiving an additional eight-episode order to be aired in 2020 as a continuation of Prince Harry and Catherine of Aragon’s burgeoning romance. Will they overcome adversity and finally be wed? Well history tells us yes. But life’s all about the journey and not the destination, isn’t it?

“Luther” (BBC America) at 8:00 PM EDT

The fifth season of Idris Elba‘s popular crime drama is wrapping up. “That was quick,” you may be thinking, and considering that this season was an achingly brief four episodes long, you would be right. The future of the show is very much up in the air. Although Elba has spoken about his desire to continue playing the character of Luther, it’s unclear whether there will a sixth season, a film, or anything at all. Even if there are additional storylines for the show, it could be years down the line, knowing the track record of many British shows like this. So it’s best that we say a tentative goodbye to Luther, and hope that he’ll be back before we know it.

“Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” (Freeform) at 5:25 PM EDT

With “Toy Story 4” premiering in theaters this weekend to largely glowing reviews, it’s a perfect time to catch up on the first two films in the franchise. Unfortunately, there’s no “Toy Story 3” on the schedule, but “Moana” is on after “Toy Story 2.” In “Toy Story”, Woody desperately clings to the affections of Andy while Buzz experiences a major identity crisis, following the original in “Toy Story 2”, the toys learn about grief and loss. All that’s missing is the third film’s focus on coming to terms with your own mortality, but one can’t have everything.
