‘Roma,’ ‘The Good Girls’ Lead Wins at Mexico’s 2019 Ariel Awards

The 2019 Mexican Ariel Awards held their annual ceremony and crowned plenty of deserved wins to flourishing Mexican filmmakers and writers Monday night. The Mexican Academy recognizes excellence in Mexican cinema, awarding the works of native filmmakers in the industry. This year, Alfonso Cuaron‘s black and white period drama “Roma” continued its strength as it swept up a total of ten wins, including for best film, director, cinematography and original screenplay. The Mexico-set feature won three Academy Awards earlier this year for best director, cinematography and best foreign feature. The film continues to soar even months after the Oscars. This is Caron’s first win at the Ariel Awards since his 1991 feature debut with, “Solo Con Tu Pareja.”

Although the director couldn’t attend the ceremony, he pre-recorded an acceptance message:

“I am sad that I cannot be there with you tonight to close out the circle of Roma,” he said. “I feel profoundly moved, appreciative and proud to belong to a community known throughout the world for its fraternity, solidarity and generosity.”

Further, Alejandra Márquez Abella‘s drama “The Good Girls” (“Las niñas  buenas”), about a struggling socialite, cupped four wins in the night, including for original music, costume design, makeup and best actress in a strong win for Ilse Salas over Yalitza Aparicio.
