Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for the rebooted “Charlie’s Angels,” directed by Elizabeth Banks. The film stars Kristen Stewart (“Personal Shopper”), Naomi Scott (“Aladdin”) and Ella Balinska (“Hunted”) as the three sharp-witted detectives working under Charlie on undercover assignments.
The film was born out of the ’70s television series that followed the missions of the three women under the Townsend Agency, headed by Charlie, who communicates to the group about intel. Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts’ series was nominated for seven Golden Globes over the course of its run. It has since been adapted into two films, 2000’s “Charlie’s Angels” and 2003’s “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. “I think women can do anything,” Stewart’s Sabina character says in the trailer. Now in its third feature iteration of the franchise, Banks’ film looks to put more fun and action into the story, highlighting its empowered sensibilities and turning the dial up on the stunts
“Charlie’s Angel’s” will be Banks’ second feature length effort in the director’s chair. She previously helmed the successful sequel comedy “Pitch Perfect 2” and even dabbled in directing short segments in other projects. With her venture into to the female-led action genre, she shares writing credits with Jay Basu and David Auburn, as well series originals. Banks has been nominated for three Primetime Emmys in the past for her work in “Modern family” and “30 Rock.” She recently starred in the James Gunn-produced alternate tale about Superman, “Brightburn.”
The trailer is backdropped by a new single collaboration between Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey. The film also stars Patrick Stewart (“Logan”) as Charlie, Noah Centineo (“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”), Sam Claflin (“Adrift”) and Banks as the Bosley agent.
“Charlie’s Angels” is produced by Columbia Pictures and Brownstone Productions. It’s being distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing and hits theaters November 15.
