What’s On TV? – Tuesday (07/02/19)- Forrest Gump and Spider-Man Sling Their Way to the Small Screen

With “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is being released today, it’s likely that most people will make tonight a movie night. However, it’s also a good night to stay home and watch some TV. There are some great options including a few previous Spider-Man films and “Forrest Gump,” a timeless story.

PICK OF THE DAY:

“Forrest Gump” (CMT) at 8:00 PM EDT

In what was a landmark year for cinema, “Forrest Gump” became the victorious Best Picture winner at the Oscars. This 1994 classic follows the titular protagonist (Tom Hanks) as he witnesses and influences various historic events. In addition, he continuously tries to win the heart of his childhood friend, Jenny (Robin Wright). Both crowd pleasing and quotable, “Forrest Gump” has been a mainstay in pop culture and in honor of its 25th anniversary, tonight’s a good chance to check it out.

WHAT’S RETURNING?:

“Tales” (BET) at 9:00 PM EDT

For anyone who likes hip-hop, the anthology series “Tales” might be a catchy tune. Created by record executive Irv Gotti, “Tales” weaves a past or present hip-hop song into the story of each episode. In addition, each song serves as the episode’s title. For example, tonight’s season premiere is titled “Brothers,” based on the Kanye West song. It’s unclear what the story will be, but be sure to tune in and find out.

MOVIES ON TV:

To celebrate the release of “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” viewers can go back further and see two previous features about everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. First is “Spider-Man 3” which airs on SyFy at 8:00 PM EDT. “Spider-Man 3” follows Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) as he battles an alien symbiote and his friend turned foe Harry Osborn (James Franco). While it is a rather divisive entry in the original franchise, it still has enough bombastic action to get fans invested.

Same with “The Amazing Spider-Man,” the 2012 reboot that came after “Spider-Man 3” underwhelmed. Instead of Tobey Maguire, this franchise revival has Andrew Garfield donning the mask. The film follows the same origin story as the original 2002 film while adding new plot details. This time around, Peter Parker falls for Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) instead of Mary Jane Watson. In addition, he battles the Lizard (Rhys Ifans) instead of the Green Goblin. “The Amazing Spider-Man” will air on FX at 8:00 PM EDT.
