What’s On TV? – Sunday (07/07/2019) – ‘The Movies’ Comes to the Small Screen

This warm and sunny Sunday in July is light on new shows premiering, but heavy on specials. There’s high stakes sports as the FIFA Women’s World Cup final, a Terminator marathon for the science fiction crowd, an ode to the silver screen for cinema aficionados, and so much more.

“The Movies” (CNN) at 9:00 PM EDT

Film fans, rejoice! CNN has created a spinoff to their popular “Decades” documentary series where producer Tom Hanks and various historians and celebrities break down major events from the mid-twentieth century. This time the focus is on the evolution of cinema. “The Movies” will be a six-part miniseries chronicling film history from the 1930s through the present day. It’s disappointing (but not surprising) that the show focuses almost exclusively on Hollywood at the expense of global cinema and leaves out the silent era entirely, yet, nonetheless seems like a good entry point for the film layperson.

“FIFA Women’s World Cup Final” (FOX) at 11:00 AM EDT

This morning, the heavily favored US women’s soccer team is poised to defend their title against the Netherlands. The US are battling some minor injuries that may give them trouble against a strong Dutch side, but they have legacy on the line. Since the tournament began in 1991, the US women’s team has never finished outside the top three, and currently holds the record for most World Cup titles won (three). They’re currently on a record-long 11-game winning streak which has seen them undefeated since 2015. But will it be enough?

“The Terminator” Marathon (BBC America) at 12:30 PM EDT

Although the latter films of the series haven’t quite managed to reach the highs of the original “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”, they’re nonetheless an entertaining watch. And with the latest installment (“Terminator: Dark Fate”) hitting theaters this November, what better time to reacquaint yourself with the franchise? BBC America will be airing the first four films of the series today — we’re only missing “Terminator: Genisys” and the short-lived television show “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” starring “Game of Thrones” actress Lena Headey.
