Disney has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming live-action version of “Mulan.”
Yifei Liu stars in the title role as a young woman who disguises herself as a man to spare her father from having to fight in war. The official synopsis reads:
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.
The film is Disney’s next live-action adaptation of one of their earlier animated films. “Mulan” was originally released in 1998 and grossed more than $300 million worldwide. Disney’s previous live-action adaptations have been critically mixed, but commercially successful with “Beauty and the Beast” earning over $1 billion worldwide. “Aladdin” is still in theaters and is the third highest grossing film of 2019. It has earned over $300 million in the US and more than $900 million worldwide.
Niki Caro directs “Mulan.” She is known for films like “Whale Rider” and “North Country,” both of which scored acting nominations for her stars. Caro also directed “McFarland, USA” and “The Zookeeper’s Wife.”
The screenplay went through several iterations and the official credits go to Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek. Like the original animated film, the story is based on an epic narrative poem, “The Ballad of Mulan,” which tells the legend of a woman in the fifth century.
Yifei Liu is a popular actress in her native China. Joining her in the cast are Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, and Jason Scott Lee, among others.
Disney will release “Mulan” in theaters on March 27, 2020.
