After a great breakthrough role in this spring’s “Captain Marvel,” Lashana Lynch will reportedly take on one of cinema’s longest running secret agents: 007. According to the Daily Mail, Lynch takes over the code name from James Bond, who has retired to Jamaica.
Prior to becoming best friends with the universe’s strongest heroine, Lashana Lynch made her feature film debut in “Fast Girls” in 2012. She appeared on television in shows like “Silent Witness” and “Bulletproof.” When “Captain Marvel” came around, the role introduced the British actress to a new crop of international fans. All eyes will now be on her as she joins one of the oldest franchises in cinema, the still-unnamed “Bond 25.”
The new film is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. As revealed so far, “Bond 25” finds James Bond pulled back into service after retirement. But his old moniker has been reassigned to a new agent, played by Lynch. And because he’s James Bond, he wastes no time attempting to seduce his replacement, only to be rebuffed.
The script has gone through several drafts, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge ultimately rewriting and updating the final version. Heading into production, many questioned the relevance of a character like James Bond in the #MeToo era. The Daily Mail article quotes an unnamed insider who said,
“This is a Bond for the modern era who will appeal to a younger generation while sticking true to what we all expect in a Bond film.”
Waller-Bridge, the Emmy-nominated writer of “Killing Eve” addressed some of the concerns herself:
“[The franchise] has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important things is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn’t have to. He needs to be true to his character.”
Lynch will be the seventh actor to be called 007. Daniel Craig has played the role of James Bond since “Casino Royale” in 2006. This will be his fifth outing, although his departure from the franchise has been rumored and anticipated for years. With the news of Lashana Lynch becoming 007, the future of the franchise is now more wide open than it has ever been before.
Whether this is a short-lived story arc for one movie or becomes the new direction for future films, Lashana Lynch goes into “Bond 25” with the predictable mix of enthusiasm and ire as fans have mixed feelings about the news. But whatever happens, Lynch will be ready. After all, not just anyone can be 007.
“Bond 25” also stars Christophe Waltz, Ana de Armas and Rami Malek. It is expected to hit theaters in April 2020.
