San Diego Comic-Con was the launching pad today for the long-in-development sequel to “Top Gun,” the hit 1986 Tom Cruise vehicle. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, “Top Gun: Maverick” stars Cruise, alongside Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, Glen Powell, Miles Teller, and more.
“Top Gun: Maverick” again follows the fighter jet pilot with the callsign Maverick. Now, picking up over 30 years later, Maverick is still fighting against authority. Only a Captain, instead of an Admiral, his old school maneuvers will surely be needed, as the film is said to include drone warfare as a plot point. Suffice it to say, someone like Maverick will again get a chance to shine, piloting jets as only he can.
The trailer highlights how much technology has changed in the ensuing decades. Cruise seems to be still having the time of his life playing Maverick, but the filmmaking techniques to capture the aerial sequences and dogfights appear substantially different. Launching at Comic-Con to build buzz almost a year in advance, “Top Gun: Maverick” suddenly becomes a sequel to keep a close eye on. Much of the plot remains unknown, but expect that to change in short order.
Cruise stars, while the Kosinski as mentioned earlier directs. Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Christopher McQuarrie, and Eric Warren Singer penned the screenplay. Claudio Miranda shot the movie, while the score is by the duo of Harold Faltermeyer and Hans Zimmer. Together, they all hope to send Maverick higher than ever before when the flick hits next summer. “Top Gun: Maverick” is one to watch out for, like the Trailer highlights.
