Taika Waititi has revealed this first teaser trailer for his upcoming satire comedy, “Jojo Rabbit.” The “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” director tweeted out the teaser clip Tuesday morning, just a while after the film was announced as part of the Toronto International Film Festival premieres. The story follows a young boy in Hitler’s army who finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. Waititi, known for his eccentric style in “What We Do in the Shadows,” channels the epitome of irony as he stars as the role of Adolf Hitler.
Waititi writes, stars and directs the satire, a pointed slag and introduction to a Hitler in only a world the “Thor: Ragnarok” director could pull off. Waititi writes the script with Christine Leunens, who wrote the novel “Caging Skies,” which the film is based on. Waititi is riding a successful wave, with the praised reinvention of the Thor character in “Ragnaraok,” and now with the announcement at San Diego Comic Con that he will be helming “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Waititi is set to write an direct the fourth installment to Marvel’s Thor cinematic timeline, with the introduction of Mighty Thor, played by a returning Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.
“Jojo Rabbit”‘s impressive cast includes Golden Globe-nominated Scarlett Johansson (“Avengers: Infinity War”), Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “Vice”), Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect,” “Isn’t It Romantic”), Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie (“Leave No Trace”), Alfie Allen (“Game of Thrones”), Stephen Merchant (“Fighting with My Family”) and introducing Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo.
“Jojo Rabbit” is produced and distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures and releases in theaters October 18.
