Noah Baumbach‘s “Marriage Story” has been selected as the Centerpiece selection at this year’s New York Film Festival. The film stars Scarlett Johansson (“Avengers: Endgame”) and Adam Driver “BlacKkKlansman”) as a couple in the middle of a divorce, a tale personal to the Oscar nominated director.
Earlier this month, first look stills from the drama were revealed, showing Driver and Johansson as partners in a marriage on its last hinges. The film also stars Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Laura Dern, Merritt Weaver, Julie Hagerty and Azhy Robertson.
Baumbach’s film “The Squid and the Whale” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. It starred Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline as a family dealing with divorce. “Marriage Story” begins to feel like a spiritual companion piece to his 2005 film. Instead of glimpsing into the life of a family in divorce, more specifically the children of divorce, Baumbach looks at the maturity of a relationship and the pains of custody battle.
Baumbach’s latest with Netflix comes just two years after his previous, a family drama for the streaming platform, “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected.)” Baumbach has directed films such as “Mistress America,” “While We’re Young,” starring Driver, “Greenberg” and “Frances Ha,” written with and starring Oscar nominated actress/director Greta Gerwig.
On Monday, Film, at Lincoln Center announced their opening night film, none other than Netflix and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman.” Netflix will be distributing both films for an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run ahead of streaming.
“Marriage Story” was recently announced as part of the premieres lineup for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. It is produced by Heyday Films and Netflix. The 57th New York Film Festival runs from September 27- October 13.
