What’s on TV? – Wednesday (7/31/19) – Buckle Up With ‘Fate of the Furious’

The Fast and the Furious” franchise is getting a new movie this week in theaters. It’s not a direct sequel to the last film but a spin-off featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s respective characters. Audiences are days away from seeing if it’s a fun addition or another unnecessary franchise feature, but in the meantime catch up with the last “Fast and the Furious” installment, which is today’s pick:

Pick of the Day:
The Fate of the Furious” (FX) at 7:00 PM ET

“The Fast and the Furious” franchise got stronger when it got bigger, more explosive and self-aware. The first couple films have their fans, of course, but as the movies became more ludicrous, they began to appeal to a wider audience, even converting some skeptics. “The Fate of the Furious” is the eighth film in the series, which should have ended with the poignant tribute to Paul Walker in the seventh film. Alas, it’s hard to say goodbye to a money-maker such as this series and the latest installment even attracted the talents of Oscar winners Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren. Strap in, go for a ride and listen to Vin Diesel wax poetic on the meaning of family.

Movies on TV:
“Widows” (HBO) at 9:40 PM ET

Pour one out for “Widows,” one of last year’s top films. The movie had a buzzy premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival but didn’t ignite any passion from movie-goers when it was released last November. Steve McQueen’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” is a tense, socially-conscious and impeccably captured movie. On paper, it seemed like a sure thing for across the board Oscar nominations. It failed to garner any on nomination morning but star Viola Davis managed to receive a surprising Best Actress nomination from BAFTA. Set your, DVRs, because you are going to want to watch “Widows” over and over again.
