What’s On TV? – Friday (08/02/19) – ‘Dear White People’ is Back in Session

Dear White People

Tonight’s highlights include looking back on the original installment of “The Fast and Furious” franchise and the pick of day, which is the return of the best social-political satire on television.

Pick of the Day:
“Dear White People” (Netflix)

When the 2014 film of the same name came out, no one would have thought “Dear White People” would become a television show. But now, in its third season on Netflix, the show has become one of televisions best in capturing the many voices of today’s millennial generation. Just like the original film, the show takes place on an Ivy League campus and deals with all types of discrimination in today’s society. With the end of season 2, we left the concepts of the original film and started diving into conspiracy theories and secret societies.

Season 3 dives into those ideas more while also building on the characters we know and love. Creator and lead writer Justin Simien has guided the show perfectly, giving a solid cast that matches the original film stride for stride. The new season looks to break away from the mold of the original film and continue to give fans something special to watch.

Movies on TV:

In case you are on the fence about going to see “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” you can always stay at home and watch the original “Fast and Furious” film to get yourself pumped up. Released in 2001, the first installment follows LAPD undercover officer Brian O’Conner as he infiltrates an underground street racing gang lead by Dominic Toretto. Considered at the time to be a contemporary iteration of “Point Break,” no one could have thought this film would spawn one of the biggest franchises in the world and continue to deliver entertaining entries. So, before you go see The Rock and Jason Statham kick butt on the big screen, let Vin Diesel and Paul Walker show you how it’s done on the small screen.
