“When God gives us free will, we are responsible for what to do, for what we fail to do.” Fox Searchlight have unveiled the first official trailer for Terrence Malick‘s “A Hidden Life,” starring August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Maria Simon, Tobias Moretti, Bruno Ganz, Matthias Schoenaerts, Karin Neuhäuser and Ulrich Matthes.
Based on real events, from visionary writer-director Terrence Malick, A HIDDEN LIFE is the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife Fani and children that keeps his spirit alive.
As Toronto International Film Festival announced additional selections to programming Tuesday morning, “A Hidden Life” was added as Malick’s film finds its North American premiere. The film first screened in France at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the François Chalais Award. Malick writes and directs the film. Executive producers are Grant Hill p.g.a, Dario Bergesio, Josh Jeter, Elisabeth Bentley and Marcus Loges. It is scored by eight-time Oscar nominated composer, James Newton Howard (“The Village,” “Michael Clayton”).
Malick is best known for the films that garnered Academy Award nominations, 2011’s drama “The Tree of Life” and 1998’s “The Thin Red Line,” which accumulated a total of seven nominations including for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer. Malick also directed “Song to Song,” “Badlands,” “Days to Heaven” and “Knight of Cups.” He directs actor August Diehl, whom many will know from Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds” and Phillip Noyce’s “Salt.”
“A Hidden Life” is distributed by Fox Searchlight and will release in theaters December 13.
