WATCH: New ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Footage Teases Dark Rey, the Return of Palpatine, and a Final Appearance from Carrie Fisher

Plus a red-eyed C-3PO, Darth Vader, and exciting new characters.

Before a delighted crowd at D23 over the weekend, Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams revealed new footage of one of the year’s most anticipated films, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA – AUGUST 24: (L-R) Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, and Daisy Ridley of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ took part today in the Walt Disney Studios presentation at Disney’s D23 EXPO 2019 in Anaheim, Calif. ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ will be released in U.S. theaters on December 20, 2019. Disney has now unveiled that footage for the rest of the world to see.

Edited into a new trailer, we get glimpses of just a few of the things that are in store when “The Rise of Skywalker” hits theaters this December. Carrie Fisher makes her final appearance as General Leia. Rey, Finn, and Poe are finally all working together. The First Order and the Resistance line up to do battle. Rey and Kylo Ren are on a collision course for another epic lightsaber duel.

And speaking of lightsabers, Rey seems to have a brand new one, and it may just be the coolest weapon this galaxy has ever shown.

But what does it all mean? Why is Rey wearing a dark hood and brandishing a red saber? Why does C-3PO have red eyes? Why do we hear Darth Vader breathing?

So many questions. So many answers to look forward to. And so many months left to speculate. Sure, this tease could mean Rey is turning to the dark side. “Star Wars” trailers are notorious for their misdirection. But then, the trailers for “The Last Jedi” made it pretty obvious Kylo wasn’t reaching for Rey since they were clearly in different places. And yet, that turned out to be exactly what it looked like.

Whether Rey turns dark or Palpatine somehow resurrects Darth Vader, “The Rise of Skywalker” promises to be an epic conclusion to the most significant franchise in cinematic history.

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Kelly Marie Tran and Domhnall Gleeson. Lupita Nyong’o, Anthony Daniels, and Joonas Suotamo reprise their roles. Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, and Dominic Monaghan are newcomers to the franchise. And Billy Dee Williams and Ian McDiarmid return for the first time since “Return of the Jedi.”

We’ll finally see how it all ends when “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” hits theaters on December 20.
