Awards: Is Brad Pitt (‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’) the Frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor?

Last month, we speculated about how Brad Pitt could be the latest actor to win an Oscar for his performance in a Quentin Tarantino film. Pitt’s role in “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” has been widely praised as some of the most charismatic of his career, which could be catnip for voters. Today, we’ll be focusing on if Pitt is actually the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.

With strong reviews, both out of the Cannes Film Festival and in general release, the movie appears to be an across the board contender. Despite some divisiveness, the picture sports an 85% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the majority of critics loving what Pitt and Tarantino have cooked up along side Leonardo DiCaprio and company. Our review, while restrained, still cited it as quality work:

Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” encompasses fun and a whole lot to admire for the cinephile who appreciates the origins and evolution of the medium. There will be quite a few who will love the initial premise before falling off by the film’s conclusion and vice versa. To encapsulate, there’s plenty to dissect, and even more to admire in the form of a triumphant and uproarious turn from one of American cinema’s greatest gifts.

As previously mentioned, Pitt certainly has the aura surrounding him of being due not just another Oscar nomination, but a win. Technically, he’s already won, having produced “12 Years a Slave,” but he’s yet to win for his work in front of the camera. A three time nominee in that regard, this could be the perfect time to recognize his accomplishments. With a Hollywood centric role, which voters always are drawn to, the opportunity could be here for a consensus win to start building for him.

Here with “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood,” Pitt is clearly the early frontrunner for the statuette. If the Oscars were held today, he’d take home the Academy Award. Best Supporting Actor will be more than just the Brad Pitt show, however. He has some big time competition headed his way, including some strong Netflix-backed contenders. They may well be what stands between him and this acting prize.

Pitt will be facing off with the likes of Al Pacino and Joe Pesci from “The Irishman,” as well as Alan Alda from “Marriage Story.” Then there’s Anthony Hopkins from “The Two Popes,” and that’s just the Netflix players. There’s also Christian Bale for “Ford V. Ferrari,” Willem Dafoe for “The Lighthouse,” and Taika Waititi for “Jojo Rabbit,” to name just a few. These diverse performances, soon to be seen on the fall film festival circuit, will ultimately determine if Pitt takes home the Oscar or not.

On AwardsCircuit’s Aug. 27 prediction updates, Pitt’s performance was ranked number one overall in the Best Supporting Actor predictions for the Academy Awards. In addition to that Oscar prediction, Pitt is currently number two in the Golden Globes predictions for Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, as well as number one in Screen Actors Guild precautions for Male Actor in a Supporting Role. That’s two of the three major shows handing Pitt a golden statue as of now.

Currently, the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor has Brad Pitt’s name etched on it. In the months to come, we will see if that remains the case, or if one of his competitors swoops in for the Oscar win. For the moment, his mix of accolades, star power, and sense of being overdue has Pitt in the lead.
